O'Driscoll wins third City individual title
Damian O'Driscoll of Brannigans won his third Cork City individual darts championship title sponsored by the Evening Echo. when at St, Vincent's on Saturday night he defeated Anthony Murray from the Tower Bar in the best of five legs final.O'Driscoll did'nt have an easy passage along the route to his third championship win as he opened against the very accomplished player Sean Daly from the Tower Bar.
Fellow Cork inter-county player Craig Sproat of the Shamrock then fell to O'Driscoll in the following game and another Cork inter-county player then followed as Jason Kavanagh also from the Shamrock went the same way as Sproat.
The surprise of the evening was young Blaine Meehan from the Island Tavern who came through to meet O'Driscoll in the quarter-final before bowing out with his head held high after some magnificent performances.
Meanwhile Murray made his way through the field with wins against Tom Lynch, Donal O'Donovan and Tony Byrne to a semi-final showdown against fellow Tower bar team-mate Martin Cotter to then book his place in the final.
O'Driscoll booked his final spot with a hard earned three legs to two win over Jerry Coughlan from the Woodview.
The final played over the best of five legs of 301 double to begin scoring saw Murray with the hand take the first leg compliments a double-twenty, this despite a 170 from O'Driscoll but, O'Driscoll responded as he won the second leg in a very mediocre leg of darts taking it on a double-five.
Murray then forged ahead again as he was helped along with a top hand of 140 on his way to a double-12 checkout as O'Driscoll could only muster a top score of 66.
The fourth leg saw O'Driscoll return with a 100 from his first throw and he then amazingly bust when throwing for 92 but, Murray's inability to rack up a top score allowed O'Driscoll in once again to finish on a double-three to square the match.
The deciding leg saw Murray score first with a return of 60, O'Driscoll followed with a hand of 80 and even though Murray put up a 98 O'Driscoll threw in a maximum 180 followed by 33 and a double-four game shot and championship along with the top prize of €500.
The best junior prize went to Blaine Meehan of the Island Tavern.

Pictured above are the Cork ladies who retained their nation title at castlebar over the weekend.
Mixed emotions were the order of the day at the INDO national darts championships which were played at the Breaffy House Hotel in Castlebar over the weekend just past.
Great credit must go to the outstanding performance of the Cork ladies team who retained their title in a repeat of last years decider as they overwhelmed the ladies from Wexford in the final by four games to nil..
Unfortunately our men’s team could not follow-on in the success of the ladies, and this can be put down mainly through their inability to close out games when in a position to do so.
Corks ladies opened in the group stages early on Saturday morning with wins over Cavan 4/2, Dublin by 6/0 and Galway by 5/1 to then progress to the Sunday morning quarter-finals against Leitrim who they defeated by four games to nil, and followed this with a very impressive 4/1 win over a much fancied Donegal team in the semi-final to then set up a repeat of last years final encounter with Wexford.
Wexford had no answer to Corks power play in this one sided final and Nicola O’Donovan, young Keira Haugh who belied her tender years, Mary Long and Sharon Buckley chalked up the four games necessary to claim the national title for the rebel County.
In the men’s competition Cork opened very impressively on Saturday with wins over Wexford by eight games to four and followed with a similar result against Offaly to go through to a quarter-final showdown with Munster neighbours Limerick who they defeated 7/1 to then set-up a mouthwatering semi-final with Dublin.
Cork began very badly in this semi-final clash as Dublin ran into a three games to nil lead but they kept their composure to then take the following seven games without reply to claim their spot in the final against Donegal who they had defeated in last years quarter-final.
The final saw Corks Damian O’Driscoll go down at number one to Campbell Jackson but they then won the next two as first John O’Shea defeated Anthony Worskie and John Paul Dowdall beat Noel O’Donnell.
Joe Collins of Cork lost to Donegal’s Paul Lynch at number four and this game was followed by a really outstanding game from Corks Peter Quinn,
Quinn threw in hands of 100, 102, 119 and a 140 as he took the first leg on a double 20 for a thirteen dart leg, and he followed to take the second leg in 14 darts with scores of 86, 114, 125 and 140 to then check out on a double18.
However that was were it all went pear-shaped for Cork as Darryl Hodgson, Martin Cotter, Stephen O’Connor, Craig Sproat and John Harte all wasted very good chances of putting this Cork team in what should have been a very commanding position.
Failure to hit a succession of out shots cost them dearly and, against a team of Donegal’s quality you will be punished, and that is what happened as Donegal took full advantage and raced away to gain a sweet revenge for last years quarter-final defeat by Cork.
Tim Jones chairman of the Cork County Darts Board said that the support that the players recieved from all the travelling fans was a credit to the rebel County and also a credit to their own conduct throughout the wonderful weekend of darts
