new year doubles champions
A thronged St, Vincent’s Hurling and Football club was the venue for the CDO Beamish Stout sponsored men’s doubles championships on Monday last with the senior doubles event throwing up a surprise, but very deserving winners in Blaine Meighan and Jason Long.
This is Meighans second success in recent times having only won the Joshua Tree singles on Wednesday of last week as he claimed the title ahead of John Paul Dowdall.
However this time around he teamed-up with fellow Island Tavern team-mate Jason Long to play in the Beamish doubles championship and they opened with a win against Stephen O’Connor and Ritchie McGrath.
The Tavern’s pairing next game saw none other then old foe John Paul Dowdall, and his partner on the day, Damian O’Driscoll of the Brannigans team take to the oche, and they went the same way as the previous team.
John Harte and Martin Dineen of the Anglers Sports Lounge were then dismissed by the Island Tavern pairing in the following game, and that set up a semi-final match against brothers Robbie and David O’Donovan who themselves had scored a couple of notable wins against some stiff opposition before going down to Meighan and Long in the semi-final.
Meanwhile at the other end of the draw it was Dinny Bob’s and Anthony Murray of the Tower Bar who were proving to be the ones to beat as they began with a win over fellow team-mates Robbie Hendrick and Tony Byrne, and followed up with a win over Chris O’Neill and John Leahy.
Dinny Bob’s and Murray then came through their semi-final against Steven Hill and Thomas Murphy to set up a final against the Island Tavern pair.
The stage final saw the Island Tavern team take the opening leg of the five due to be played after top scores of 120 and 160 and they followed in taking the second leg after top hands of 123 and 140 before the Tower Bar pairing won the third leg, but it was only a temporary respite as Meighan and Long hit back strongly in the fourth leg to wrap up a comfortable win in the end for them both.
Forty pairs entered the Beamish junior doubles championship and an intensive day of darts playing followed before the semi-finalists became known.
Paul O’Neill and Maurice Roche of the Gerald Griffin came through to play Pat O’Shaugnessy and Jason Roche, and it was the Roche/O’Neill pairing who went through after a very close and tense semi-final.
Meanwhile, brothers Brendan and Michael McSweeney of the Aunties team were doing battle with the Sam’s Bar pairing of Paul Murphy and Brian Delaney, and another really tense semi-final followed here before the Ballincollig team of Murphy/Delaney went through.
Murphy/Delaney had the throw and a maximum hand of 180 soon hand them on a checkout double, but it was their inability to finish off the required double that cost them dearly.
The Gerald team took full advantage of the situation and were quickly in to steal the leg on a double 20 for an unexpected lead.
Hands of 110 and 120 saw Murphy/Delaney square the match, and with the following two legs then been shared it all came down to the deciding leg of the five.
However the fifth leg proved to be an anti climax as both sides had their chances of taking the game before O’Neill hit the winning double 20 for the win.
`The youths singles championship once again proved to be very competitive with an entry of 28 and saw Jamie Thornhill take the title with a 2-1 win over Dean Dunphy in the finalOP'Sullivan's win High House junior league
O'Sullivan's of Shandon Street claimed their first ever darts title when at the High House on Monday night they captured the CDO High House sponsored junior league by 4-2 after a very impressive display against a gallant Aunties team.

Shamrock make it two in-a-row
Same competition, same venue, same two teams, same scoreline, same deserving winner the Shamrock bar who secured A two in-a-row as they brought the CDO President’s A division league pennant back to Shanbally with a 4-2 win over the Tower bar in the final on Monday night last at the Hollyhill Inn.
Both semi-finals commenced at 8.30 and on board one it was champions the Shamrock who built up a 3-0 lead on Brannigans only to be reined back to 3-2 and in a tense sixth game of the semi-final it was John Nyhan who booked the Shamrock’s final berth.
Over on board two the Tower also ran in to a 3-0 lead, but the Anglers reduced the arrear’s as John Harte took game four approaching the break, but that was that for the Anglers as the Tower through Eddie Cull advanced to their second final in-a-row.
The first game of the stage final brought Shamrock player Peter Quinn and Tower player Robbie Hendrick to the oche, and despite Hendrick putting up a maximum 180 it was Quinn with hands of 120 and 140 who took this opening leg on a double 8.
Again Hendrick scored well in the second leg with top scores of 81, 100 and 100, but it was Quinn who was even sharper as scores of 99, 100, 120 and 140 saw him take the leg and the first game on a double 16.
Another excellent game followed at number two as Jason Kavanagh and Tower’s Martin Cotter squared off and it was Cotter who took the first leg here as Kavanagh was slack with his double out shots.
Kavanagh threw in hands of 97, 140, 140 but just could not kill off the leg, and it was Cotter who took it from 60 after posting hands of 100 and 140 for the lead.
Kavanagh squared as a 135 helped him to the second, and in a very tight deciding leg Cotter came through from 74 to level the match.
Game three, and it was Shamrock player Ritchie McGrath and Tower player John O’Shea squaring up, and O’Shea after hands of 85, 100 and 125 won the opening leg on a double 20 and he followed in taking leg two after top scores of 85 and 100 twice saw him hit a double 18 for the win.
John Twomey was the Shamrock pick at number four while the fourth choice Tower player was Sean Daly, and it was Twomey who took the lead in this game as a double 18 edged him home.
Daly fought back to win the second leg after posting top scores of 100 and a 140 but Twomey in a very tight deciding leg just about edged it to have it all square at the break.
The break certainly did not do the Tower any favours, and it was Shamrock’s Joe Collins who came through in his clash at number five with Anthony Murray as he hit a double 20 in each of his winning legs to see his team 3-2 ahead.
Game six saw the end for the Tower bar as John Nyhan with hands of 85, 96, 100, 100 won the first leg of his match against Dinny Bob’s, and the Shamrock player wrapped up proceedings as further hands of 81, 95, 96 and a 100 saw him hit a double 16 for the win.
The man of the match award went to Shamrock’s Peter Quinn.

Ladies Evening Echo win for Ma Dullea's
Ma Dullea’s made it four in-a-row in the final of the CDO Evening Echo sponsored ladies A division league, as they got the better of rivals and neighbours the High house by three games to two in the final played at the Glenryan Tavern last night.
High House surely may feel that they left this chance pass them bye after being in front at 2-1 and also having their chances to close out the game at 2-2 but it was the coolness and precision of the Ma Dullea’s players that won them this final.
Ma Dullea’s made light work of their semi-final against the winners of the play-off game on Tuesday night, the Anglers sports lounge, as they coasted to a 3-0 win, but the other semi-final between neighbours the High House and the Josh was going all the way as Kim Jenkins was the hero in her win over Michelle Gould to pave the way for her teams path into the final.
The final saw Jenkins reverting to a number one role as she took on Ma Dullea’s Kathleen Doyle, but she did not carry her game through as Doyle ran out a winner here by two legs to nil, as a double 2 in the first leg and a finish from 58 in the second leg saw her over the line.
The second game of this final brought two inter-county players to the oche in the shape of Ma Dullea’s Kathryn Hewitt and Joshua player Ciara Haugh, and in a most competitive game it was Haugh who took it over three legs of top quality darts to square this final at 1-1.
Game three brought the in-form player at the moment Breda Barrett of the Joshua Tree to the oche, and with her there was ma Dullea’s long serving player Rita Hannigan.
Barrett had hands of 85, 95 and 97 as she took the first leg on a double 1 and she also took the second, and deciding leg on a double 1 to have her team leading at the break 2-1.
The resumption saw Joshua tree call on Louise O’Neill while for Ma Dullea’s the call went out to another long serving player and Cork County captain Mary Long to keep her side in this final, and Long obliged as she clinically defeated O’Neill by two legs to nil to sent the match to the final game of the night.
Tension all round then as both players approached the oche, Eileen Jones for the Josh and Freda Uniacke for Ma Dullea’s.
Jones was first to score and a 39 return was disappointing to her while Uniacke stuck a 89 to take a lead that she held all the way to a double 3 finish for the lead.
Jones wasn’t giving up though as hands of 85, 93 and 97 saw her take the second leg from 69 to level.
The deciding leg was a really tension filled affair as the game shifted from one player to the other with both players having their chances to close out this final, but it was closed and it was the Ma Dullea’s player Uniacke who claimed the win as she hit a double 3 for the title.
Consolation for the Josh was in the lady of the match award going to Ciara Haugh.

October doubles at St, Vincent's
A determined fight-back from two legs behind saw the doubles pairing of Damian O’Driscoll and John Paul Dowdall claim the CDO October “A” doubles championship ahead of doubles experts John O’Shea and Martin Cotter at St, Vincent’s on Monday afternoon last.
A packed St, Vincent’s also saw the B grade doubles championship being ran on the day with victory going to the High House pairing of Ger Murphy and Jamie Kelleher who defeated the Muskerry Arms team of Brian Kiely and Pat Ryan, while the youth’s award went to Bartek Jamowicz.
The A doubles championship saw O’Driscoll/Dowdall see off fellow Brannigans team-mates Finny O’Brien and William Fouhy in their semi-final game while the Tower Bar team of O’Shea/Cotter saw off the challenge of another Brannigans pairing in Steven Coveney and Jamesie Corcoran.
O’Shea had the throw in the first leg of the final and he returned a 100 while further scores of 99, 99 and 105 fro Cotter led O’Shea to a double 2 which he dispatched despite top scores from the Brannigans team of 92, 100 and 140.
The Tower pairing then made it two legs to nil after top hands of 140, 135, 125 saw Cotter take the leg on a double 1 as O’Driscoll and Dowdall struggled to make an impact, but things were soon to change.
The third leg went against the darts in a dramatic way after a 45 from O’Shea with his first three darts, O’Driscoll followed and opened with a 60 and Dowdall followed with a 100 with a further 100 then from O’Driscoll.
Dowdall then came back from the oche after he put up an 85 to leave O’Driscoll 156 remaining while the Tower pairing had 100 on the scoreboard, but they never got a shot, as O’Driscoll with a treble 20, treble 20 double 18 hit the 156 to take what was match saving leg.
The fourth leg also went the way of O’Driscoll/Dowdall as O’Driscoll hit a double 20 to level, and the fifth and deciding leg saw the Brannigans team hit scores of 84, 94,100 and 140 to then see Dowdall hit the double 10 for the title as the Tower pairing struggled with their game.
Ger Murphy and Jamie Kelleher overcame the challenge of the Baker Street pairing of Ryan Courtney and Mark Heaphy in their semi-final while their opponents in the final were getting the better of Dan Flaherty and Martin O’Mahony in their semi-final.
The final proved to be an anti climax as the Muskerry Arms team of Kiely/Ryan failed to get their game going across the three legs of darts played.
Top scores of 100 and 121 saw the winners take the first leg on a double 10, while they also took the second leg after top scores of 100, 121 and 125 led them to a double 5 checkout , and it was game and match shot as Kelleher stuck a double 4 for the win in the third leg.
Bartek Jamowicz was the top youth on the day as he captured the youth’s singles championship with a 2-1 win over Liam Carmody in an excellent final.
In the semi-finals Bartek defeated Kelvin Kieran while Carmody defeated Jamie Twomey.
